Deceased Name: JAY E. SHAPIRO Jay E. Shapiro, 77, passed away May 22, in Scottsdale, AZ.
Mr. Shapiro was born in Duluth, MN., and was a 60 year
resident of Hibbing, MN., before retiring to Scottsdale, AZ., 15 years ago.
He served in WWII as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, and was a graduate
of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy. From 1949-1984, Mr.
Shapiro, a registered Pharmacist, was a prominent member of the Hibbing
business community, and owner of Shapiro Drug, Inc. Civic activities included:
President of the Central Mesabi Medical Foundation, Chairman of the Board of
Hibbing General Hospital, Board of Directors of the First Bank, Chairman of
the United Way and Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce. In retirement,
Mr. Shapiro received national recognition for his Senior Peer Counseling
endeavors, was an active member of Temple Chai, and he remained an ardent
sportsman and Rosarian. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Elaine; brother
and sister in law, Jack and Jackie Shapiro; children Pam Shapiro, Jeffrey
& Debbie Shapiro, Jonathon & Susan Shapiro, Nancy & Jerry
Dellheim; grandchildren; Aaron and Sara Shapiro, Elizabeth and Molly
Dellheim, Jessica, Marissa, and Felicia Shapiro; and numerous nieces and
nephews. SERVICES: Sunday afternoon at the Minneapolis Jewish
Cemetery, 70 1/2 at Penn. Ave. So., Richfield. Shiva will be observed Sunday
evening at the residence of Marvin Kahner 3837 Beard Ave. So. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Central Mesabi
Medical Foundation, 750 East 34th Street, Hibbing, Minnesota, 55746.
